I basically haven't even finished reading the whole piece about Marcus Smart and feel the need to howl into the wind already. It's un-f'ing-believable! I mean, what?!?! So my whole NBA-watching life spent supporting Smart's former team is now over. F you, Smart's former team. I hung in there after you betrayed Isaiah Thomas, but this is a trade too far. Porzingis? Really?! For the love of...
I actually slammed my laptop shut and told Mrs RA that my day was over. Then I opened it again specifically so I could write this (and have the music back on).
As a non-US basketball fan I'm lucky that having no ties to a place meant that when I started watching the NBA I was able to just fall under the spell of whatever team/s or player/s I enjoyed watching the most. Smart's former team and the Knicks at the start. I've followed traded players to new teams, so IT to Denver left us here as Nuggets fans since he arrived and stayed since he left. But my biggest love was for the team in green. Even surviving the IT debacle.
Such a shame; I feel gutted. I have no idea why I'm taking it so hard. I mean, of course I know why; Smart for Porzingis (sorry big fella - we even watch the Wizards because the Knicks sent him away and we followed him around) is just so utterly ludicrous and, like the Isaiah Thomas stuff, looks like the act of a family betraying one of its own (for bloody Porzingis, of all people)!
Honestly, I'm not down on KP. Truly. It's just that Porzingis is no Marcus Smart...
Its not just you...this is a bad deal for Boston on the court and in the locker room. Smart was our guy - sure he took some bad shots but he had the stones to take them under pressure, and his defense and competitive nature far outweighed a few bricks
Brogdon is 31? That really illustrates the leagues fondness for drafting 19yr olds..as for Porzingas, has he even played in a big game? Or for a team that wasn't underperforming? He made zero difference in NY, Dallas or Washington. Let's hope a winning environment runs off on him and not the other way around.
Good luck to both players and both teams, maybe this will work out like Haliburton for Sabonis.
The one thing that nobody seems to want to deal with is the fact that Mazzulla can’t coach anything about defense. That’s as much a reason as any why they dealt Smart and are likely parting ways with Grant as well. Players that run through a brick wall; coaches that implement stifling zones; they’re all like learning Latin to Mazzulla. All the 1. whatever post up Porzingis stats won’t mean a thing next April-June. The only number that interests me now is what Smart will be wearing so I can buy his jersey.
I'm mainly grateful that my team stayed out of deals for both Porzingis and Beal. Too expensive, and don't seem like pillars that can help hold up a contender.
I think Phoenix is absolutely boned, even if their players can maintain reasonable health. If they're to fill out a roster with actual NBA players, then Ayton is gone, and that's not nothing. The rest of the league knows the Suns are over a barrel, and can lowball them while acquiring a pretty good center in DA.
“I’m bullish on humans generally”
Same.
Came here to comment on that too. Love that line.
How is Porzingis only 27?! I sweat I watched him get drafted 15 years ago!

Man, I hope today's newsletter gets better ;-)

It’s smart and a second for porzingis and two firsts. You are way overthinking this.
