Which is the best usage: applying the power you have to create freedom for those who have neither; or using your freedom to maintain the power you have?

Great essay, Tom. It does seem like Silver is using a lot of weasel words to explain away real-world concerns that have tremendous impact on over half of the population. Saying he didn't want the NBA "chased from state to state" implies that it would be the states throwing the lib'rul NBA out, instead of a league that allegedly values civil and human rights making a strong statement that, no, we aren't trying to enrich the people of a state that deliberately refuses bodily autonomy to women.

I understand that the Jazz organization is not at fault, and they have said the right things, to a point. The NBA did the right thing in Charlotte, but now seems prepared to soft-sell the far more wide-ranging impact of Dobbs. Inconsistency about whether or not it's important that the uteruses of women from puberty to menopause are being effectively nationalized doesn't seem like the right place for equivocation.

Silver got smacked on the nose pretty hard by China over Daryl Morey's tweet about human rights violations in China, so he may be reticent to face similar pressure from white evangelicals in America. Regardless, he has but one way to show the offense the NBA takes at this unprecedented stripping of rights, and moving the game is it. If Silver believes all of the things he's previously said about similar social issues, I don't see how he can maintain his current posture.
