Alright, who forgot to latch the lid on the Warriors' coffin?
PLUS: The Grizzlies-Lakers hatefest is rekindled and a strange confluence of Nuggetdom ended the Thunder's unbeaten start.
Good morning. Let’s basketball.
The Wedding Dance; Pieter Bruegel the Elder; 1566
Scores
Magic 111, Pacers 118 — Orlando offense check: they had an excellent night! Of course, it was against the, uh, work-in-progress Indiana defense. And Orlando still lost because they were still ice cold from deep (7/25) and Indiana’s offense is quite powerful. The Pacers had five different players with 17 or more points, and six with 15+. (That included Jarace Walker, who had a career night.)
Bennedict Mathurin, who is very different from anyone else Indiana has, shot 14 free throws.
Pistons 107, Hornets 108 — A second putback game-winner of the week! This time: Brandon Miller.
Excellent defense on the possession from the Pistons … and then a totally demoralizing putback on the strongside.
Warriors 118, Celtics 112 — After their 6-1 start, Golden State faced this portion of their schedule: at Celtics, at Cavaliers, at Thunder. Task 1 is complete. And how.
The Warriors held Boston to 40 points in the first half, which feels impossible. But cold deep shooting and 10 turnovers will do that to you. Jayson Tatum exploded in the second half and Boston figured some things out against this new-look Golden State team. But Stephen Curry had nothing to figure out, because he figured out this Boston team — or a version of them — three years ago.
Boston is missing Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis. But the result is almost beside the point. The point is that the Warriors are proving they are in this class, which is an incredible turn of events. Andrew Wiggins looks like 2021-22 Andrew Wiggins. Draymond Green’s defense is as good as ever. Curry has it, even when Jrue Holiday is standing across from him. And against all odds, Buddy Hield hasn’t hit his expiration date yet. (A game-high +20 for Chavano. What is happening?!)
